The Challenge
In order to transform how they approach design as an organization, Schlumberger partnered with frog to create a 15-week immersive learning experience to teach their teams how to implement design thinking through the development of a new software application.
The goal was twofold – create ambassadors of change in the approach to software development by embedding Schlumberger teams inside frog and deliver a functioning MVP of a highly intelligent and collaborative well integrity software application.
To start, the team created a detailed plan for designing and developing the WI/RT MVP and then identified key points for teaching called "Learning Moments". Out of this effort, frogITDT, or frog's Introduction to Design Thinking initiative was born.
The Process
An initial kickoff workshop that included all key stakeholders from across the organization helped the team fully understand the current state of the organization, assess the needs for change, and align participants on the goals, outcomes, and delivery of the program.
The Schlumberger team was exposed to the process of Design Research which is intended to build deep empathy with the user by understand their needs and behaviors, experiencing first-hand their daily routines, working environment, and pain points, and ultimately becoming experts in the field of well integrity services.
Once in the field, research teams generated a job timeline with participants as well as sorted and prioritized software features and functionality created from an initial set of hypothesis intended for the development backlog.
Design research led to the creation of a number of persona that were synthesized into four archetypes, six key insights that represented the biggest opportunity areas to design against, and a set of prioritized features for the MVP delivery. More importantly, Schlumberger designers not only learned the value designing for the user, but also how to identify key patterns in user needs and behaviors so that solutions aren't based on an individual's unique desires and requests.
A sitemap and user flows helped the team visualize the entirety of an end-to-end well integrity workflow.
Delivery and Results
In the end, we delivered an industry-leading data delivery experience that enables real-time monitoring, collaboration and dynamic reporting of well integrity, that is highly intelligent, scaleable, and reflective of Schlumberger's best-in-class client services.
Additionally, we developed and delivered a Design Toolkit documenting our design process that our client can leverage to champion design transformation across their organization. This nearly 200 page curriculum documents the “why” and “how” behind every activity on our program to help inform a design thinking project moving forward.
